just because you offer rpm doesn't mean you can't offer tar.gz as well.  

RPM is actually a pretty sophisticated package management system.  it
includes installation, removal, upgrading, verification, arbitrary scripts
during build/install/removal process.... exactly what features are you
looking for?

weez> tar zxvf landb-x.xx.tar.gz cd LANdb-x.xx ./install.pl

rpm -ivh landb-version.i386.rpm

rpm -e landb to remove it
rpm -Uvh landb-newversion.i386.rpm to upgrade to a new version
rpm -ba landb-version.src.rpm to rebuild from src.rpm
rpm -ta landb-version.tar.gz to rebuild from tar.gz with landb.spec file in
it.
