This 9/6/2004: This site has been abandoned. See The Nerdarium for geek articles instead. 1/12/2003: ...Over two years since the last update to this page. After two years, the only thing that seems worth mentioning is the opening of MailandFiles.com, a service providing file storage, email, and web pages, all for $5/month! This service will directly benefit FreeLists, so we need customers. 1/2/2001: Welcome to the actual start of the next millenium. :) I've got some greatish news: Today was my first day at my first "real" job. I work for Ivy Tech State College now, a great place to work for anyone in the Indianapolis area. Updates have been rare, and with the FreeLists stuff getting more and more time consuming, I won't even begin to make promises about getting back into the Avenir Web stuff. So I guess this is now something of a "ghost site." Anyone willing to do any web work around here is welcome to it, just give me a mail saying so. 9/17/2000: We're back. We've now completely recovered from the crash that happened on the 4th. We've been running on a temporary machine since then, but we're now back on the correct server, with some improvements. The system now has a RAID-1 array, so we shouldn't have to worry too much about losing data again. 9/4/2000: Disaster. The server's hard drive completely crashed today. Lots of data has been lost. Mailing lists on FreeLists are down too. We'll be back up soon though! IF YOU HAD AN EMAIL ACCOUNT HERE, please email me to get it added again. All accounts were lost. 8/15/2000: Linux-discussion moves to FreeLists. I've moved the Linux-discussion mailing list over to FreeLists for better management. There is now a searchable archive for the list too, which is a big help. All future Avenir Web mailing lists will probably end up on FreeLists, although I'm not sure what to do with the existing ones. 8/9/2000: New Project! I've started FreeLists, a service designed to provide the internet community with free, no-advertisement, no-hassle mailing lists. Signup today! 8/1/2000: Some somewhat exciting news: I've quit my full time job. I'll now have plenty of free time to work on devel and other, more fun things. Avenir web's one of those things on the top of my list. I've got a spare machine here with Av Web's name on it. We've been beating on it for two years, and little 486's can only take so much. :) 6/23/00: Well, work here and there has been taking up ALL of my free time (and then some :( ), so unfortunately, I've made no recent updates to the site. If you're interested in seeing what I've been doing at work, have a look at my projects page (not on avenir web). 3/10/00: I'm releasing a new package, called NCPweb. It's a web-based frontend to the ncpfs netware package for Linux. Coupled with LANdb, this is my second package. :) 2/13/00: Funny story: The RSA was attacked early this afternoon. I've posted a screenshot from Netscape of the altered page, owned by "Coolio," but it's attracted so much attention that I've also put up a mirror of it here. 1/13/00: Well, I've finally taken the news column offline. I hadn't updated it in way too long, so it was time for it to go. I'll still accept help, if anyone's willing to give it. :) 1/7/00: It seems I'll never find the time to update the news daily again. I spend all of my time with email and LANdb, and too little time with the site. I'll probably take that part of the site offline sometime soon. 11/09/99: I've taken the message board offline. It hasn't been very active lately, so I doubt that many will miss it. The scripts that run the board, called wwwboard, are freely available scripts, and they have some rather gross security problems. Rather than continuously patch them, I've decided to just disable the board. You'll still be able to read the old posts, you just won't be able to make any new posts. You can, however, still get your questions answered on COMP. Sorry for any inconvenience. 11/08/99: The COMP archive is now updated daily. Check out our discussion on the Microsoft/DOJ discussion! 10/12/99: Avenir Web turns 100! Today, we served out our 100,000th webpage! Exciting? Maybe, for a site that started as a 486 in a dorm room. :) Anyway, not much else going on around here. Work on LANdb has kept me busy beyond belief, and I've had no time to hack up some webpages. Contributions, as always, are more than welcome... 9/5/99: Wow, junior year just redefined "busy" for me. Work, consulting, homework, classes, and a new project, LANdb. Basically, I've spent every free minute of my free time working on this perl interface to a MySQL database, and I'm having to learn it all as I go. I'm hoping to get it up to a major version release, so I can give it a break for a couple weeks. The project started out as a work-related task that I volunteered for, and has grown into something a bit bigger. Looking around on the web, I found that there wasn't anything like LANdb, so now there is. It ought to be pretty interesting, as I'm releasing the source under the GPL. Let's hear it for Open Source software, eh?
We're still accepting contributions from visitors! With efforts
directed toward new projects, keeping older sections up-to-date is becoming
more and more difficult. We're looking for volunteers willing to contribute
time, knowledge, and a bit of HTML to the various projects. See the Contributions section for more details.
